Even if you have not heard of his band Oingo Boingo, you have heard Danny Elfman's music in countless movies and TV shows. And although he wrote the theme for The Simpsons, his most famous endeavour is his collaboration with American director Tim Burton, which happens to be what this tour is focusing on.
Conductor John Mauceri leads an impressive orchestra through Elfman's greatest themes like Batman, Mars Attacks, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Hearing those classic scores played by a large symphony is quite the experience, and I got goosebumps on numerous occasions. It was also great being able to re-discover some pieces of music I had dismissed because I didn't enjoy the movies as much, like Planet of the Apes of Big Fish.
But the climax of the show was the performance of numerous songs from A Nightmare Before Christmas, with Danny Elfman himself reprising his parts from the movie.
A great night of wonderful music.
