It's only April but the new album by Tedeschi/trucks band is already shaping up to be one of the best releases of the year and unsurprisingly, last night's concert at the venerable Olympia theatre in Paris is already high in the running for gig of the year. In fact, I fail to see how anyone will be able to top the Tedeschi/Trucks Band's authentic blend of soul, Southern rock, blues and jazz and the impressive musicianship on display on that stage.
Susan Tedeschi's voice is on par with some of the great Rn'B voices of the sixties, and Derek Trucks is simply the best guitarist of the last twenty-five years. Their repertoire is top-notch, whether their originals like Signs, Midnight In Harlem, Bound For Glosry or their choice of covers of tunes by Willie Nelson, BB King or the Box Tops by way of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. The whole thing actually sounds like an updated version of the Mad Dogs & Englishmen group: a soul revue with two drums, horns, four singers, an organ... Never has secular music sounded so spiritual.
In this digital age, the Tedeschi/trucks band organic approach to songwriting, recording and performing is a beautiful anomaly: their music sounds like wood and tube amps. It sounds like friends. It sounds like family.
