This Friday's Playlist is an overview of the most epic songs in the Southern Rock genre. Expect lots of cool guitar solos and even some sweet vocal harmonies here and there.
Southern Rock is a hybrid genre that is in equal parts hard rock, blues and country and sometimes a little jazz thrown in there as well for good measure, as with the Allman Brothers Band. Killer riffs and solos, earthy grooves and lyrics about the Southern experience.
The genre has become synonymous with tragedy since the untimely deaths of some of its most famous players in the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is also very complacent in its use of questionable imagery. But this isn't the time or place for controversy. This is the time and place to rock out to these timeless tunes.
I realise that, yes, technically The Sheepdogs cannot be considered Southern Rock since they are from Canada. But their sound is unmistakably indebted to the Allman Brothers and other Southern Rock artists so I've included them here.
I also know that I'm stretching the definition a little bit by including Texan acts like ZZ Top, Johnny Winter and other. And yes, Acid Bath and Corrosion of Conformity are closer to Sludge Metal than they are to the Skynyrd ethos. And a band like Sea Level, while technically from the South, doesn't play the hard rock we've come to expect under the Southern Rock umbrella.
But maybe the genre is more diverse than we thought? Maybe there is more to Southern Rock than a three-guitar attack and songs about guns? Or maybe not.
In any case, enjoy, comment and share!
