Scary Pockets (Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte) are a band that got famous playing Funk covers on YouTube. They hooked up with organist Larry Goldings in 2018 under the Scary Goldings banner. For their European debut, they've added Lemar Carter on drums as well as Louis Cole from electro-Jazz duo Knower, young hotshot bassist Mononeon and Jazz guitar legend John Scofield. This is roughly the line-up that released Scary Goldings IV last year. Needless to say, the Jazz/Funk supergroup was one of the unmissable events of the Villette Jazz Festival.
Given the staggering amount of talent on that stage, there was a refreshing lack of ego to the whole affair. In fact, everybody was focused on one thing: the groove. It didn't matter that Scofield is an icon, or that Goldings played with everyone from Jim Hall to Maceo Parker and James Taylor... It didn't matter that Mononeon's outfit was more flamboyant that Bootsy on Mardi-Gras, and it didn't matter that Jack Conte is the founder and CEO of Patreon... The only thing that mattered last night was the FUNK.
