Check out the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute from last night's CMT Music Awards

The Country Music Television Music Awards show was held last night in Austin, Texas and featured a supergroup specially assembled to pay tribute to Gary Rossington, the last mainstay of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, who passed away a few weeks ago.

Led by Paul Rodgers and Cody Johnson on vocals, Chuck Leavell on keys, and Slash, Billy Gibbons and Warren Haynes on guitar, featuring LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd on backing vocals and a rhythm section of Ethan Pilzer on bass and Rich Redmond on drums, they played a soulful medley of Simple Man and Sweet Home Alabama. Simply put, it was absolutely sick. No one was hogging the spotlight, trying to upstage the others. No one was over-singing or over-playing. It was tasteful, reverent, but also FUN! You can watch the performance in the YouTub video embedded below.

Obviously, everyone is busy with their own projects and this performance was just a one-off. But man, wouldn't it be cool if they they took this on the road to pay tribute to the Skynyrd catalogue? Maybe have Johnny Van Zant and Rick Medlocke (who both attended the show) pop up on some numbers? Moot point, wishful thinking. But one can dream, right?

Let us know what you thought of the performance in the comments below or on our socials. Enjoy!
