Album Review: The Altons - Heartache in Room 14

Daptone Records, home to Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, and The Budos Band, continues its winning streak with The Altons' debut, Heartache in Room 14. This Los Angeles group delivers a full-length album evoking a late-night dive bar where vintage soul, psychedelic haze, and Latin grooves intertwine. While drawing heavily from classic Philly soul, 60's pop and sychedelia—languid vocals, hazy grooves, lush instrumentation, and tape-warm production reminiscent of a lost Delfonics session—The Altons infuse their sound with a distinct East L.A. flavor.

This blend of soulful harmonies, Tex-Mex undertones, and a woozy, dreamlike vibe (think Philly soul as seen through the lens of David Lynch) sets them apart. The dual lead vocals of Adriana Flores and Bryan Ponce are a standout, their combined voices creating something rich and haunting, while their traded lines convey tension and longing. Tracks like "Float" and "Tangled Up In You" showcase this vocal chemistry over deep grooves, while "Del Cielo Te Cuido" emphasizes their Latin roots. Hints of Texan twang in the guitar lines even recall early Calexico.

While the album occasionally leans too heavily into its reverence for the past—a few up-tempo tracks would also be welcome—The Altons' tight songwriting, flawless execution, and undeniable ability to create atmosphere shine through. Heartache in Room 14 may not be groundbreaking, but it's a damn fine, bittersweet record. Dim the lights, pour a drink, and let the heartbreak begin.
