Sunflower Bean walk the tightrope between alternative rock grit and arena rock spectacle, striking a perfect balance between the rawness of the former and the grand ambitions of the latter. Their sound is muscular yet melodic, rooted in punk urgency but never afraid of a towering hook or a searing guitar solo. They come from a generation for whom Whitesnake and Bryan Adams are as legitimately cool as The Black Lips or The White Stripes, and they’re absolutely right. No snobbery, no pretension—just whatever it takes to rock. The most important thing, always: killer songs. Julia Cumming is a force of nature onstage, equal parts swagger and charm, while Nick Kivlen isn’t afraid to push his guitar to the stratosphere when the moment demands it. A great show from a band that understands rock’s past but has its eyes fixed on something bigger.
