Friday's Playlist: Psytrance


This Friday's Playlist is a little outside of our comfort zone. Electronic music isn’t typically our go-to, but we’ve been digging into psychedelic trance lately and wanted to share some of the highlights from that scene. Psychedelic trance, or psytrance, is a high-tempo subgenre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 1990s from the Goa trance movement in India. It's known for its fast BPMs (typically between 135–150), layered synths, and hypnotic rhythmic patterns—designed to induce a kind of sonic trance. The genre traces back to the acid house parties of late-’80s Goa but really came into its own with artists like Hallucinogen, Astral Projection, and Etnica. Since then, it’s splintered into numerous substyles—full-on, dark psy, forest, progressive—with modern acts like Infected Mushroom, Vini Vici, and Astrix taking it to global festival stages. We've been told that certain chemicals can enhance the experience, but we can neither confirm nor deny that particular claim...
